Laparoscopic cholecystectomy

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy

Gallbladder removal is a common, low-risk procedure that allows the patient to return home on the same day. It is performed by inserting a small video camera through four incisions—a procedure known as laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Reasons for laparoscopic gallbladder removal:

The procedure is performed if the patient suffers from:

  • Gallstones.
  • Stones in the bile duct.
  • Inflammation of the gallbladder (cholecystitis).
  • Large gallbladder polyps.
  • Gallstone-induced pancreatitis.

Pre-operative measures:

  • Blood tests and assessment of the patient’s medical condition.
  • Avoiding smoking.
  • Avoiding blood-thinning medications (such as certain arthritis medications).
  • Urine analysis.

Post-operative advice:

  • Avoid lifting heavy objects.
  • Walk daily to prevent blood clots.
  • Maintain wound hygiene.
  • Take prescribed medications.
  • Consume fiber-rich foods to promote bowel movements.
