Anal fistula

The word fistula is a word that is somewhat incomprehensible in our societies, but it is possible for simplification to liken it to a tunnel, because an anal fistula is an abnormal tunnel that connects between the anus and the surface of the skin.

In most cases, the fistula is the result of the formation of an abscess that occurred before that, which led to erosion of the muscular barriers between the internal cavity and the surface of the skin in women.

What are the causes of anal fistula:

  • Bacterial infection of the glands in the anal canal.
  • Formation of an abscess containing pus in the anal area.
  • Tuberculosis.
  • Cancer.
  • Crohn’s disease.
  • Sexually transmitted diseases like syphilis.
  • Surgical injury.

What are the symptoms of an anal fistula:

  • Repeated complain of anal abscess that reoccurs despite its treatment.
  • Pain in the anal area that increases with defecation, and usually the pain is similar to purulence, and this is due to the presence of internal pus.
  • Swelling in the anal area.
  • Drops of blood with stool.
  • Bloody or purulent secretions come out of an abnormal opening in the anal area, and the patient may feel comfortable after emptying this pus.

Important tips after anal fistula surgery:
It is necessary to maintain hygiene procedures, and to eat foods rich in fiber: such as vegetables and fruits because this helps to facilitate the passage of stool without causing complications in the anal canal, laxatives: they are prescribed by the doctor to avoid constipation during the recovery period.
