Hernia repair

Inguinal hernia occurs when tissue, such as part of the intestine, protrudes through a weak point in the abdominal muscles. It is possible that the resulting protruding part hurts, especially when coughing, bending over, or lifting a heavy object. However, many cases of hernia do not cause pain.

Symptoms of inguinal hernia:

Symptoms of inguinal hernia are many, including:

  • Nausea, vomiting, or both.
  • Sudden pain increases rapidly.
  • A hernia is a loose swelling that turns red, purple, or dark.
  • Inability to defecate or pass gas.

Hernia treatment is carried out in more than one way such as:

  • Open surgery hernia repair: in this surgery, which may be performed under local anesthesia, sedation, or general anesthesia, the doctor makes an incision in the groin and pushes the protruding tissue back into the abdomen. After that, the surgeon sutures the weakened area, reinforcing the suture with an artificial mesh (with hernioplasty). Then the hole is closed with stitches, pins, or surgical glue.
  • Minimally invasive hernia repair procedure: this procedure is done under full anesthesia where the doctor makes small incisions in the abdomen and repairs the hernia endoscopically.

Umbilical hernia:

An umbilical hernia occurs when a part of the intestine bulges out through the hole in the abdominal muscles near the navel. It is common and usually harmless.

An umbilical hernia is diagnosed by medical examination. Sometimes radiographic imaging examinations — such as abdominal ultrasounds or computed tomography — are used to look for complications.

The umbilical hernia is treated by surgery where a small incision is made near the navel. The herniated tissue is returned to the abdominal cavity and sutures the hole in the abdominal wall to close it. Surgeons usually use an adult mesh to help strengthen the abdominal wall.
